Duvall-Deepalaya Father and Daughter Initiative.

Progress Report (June to September 2011)

The Duvall-Deepalaya Father-Daughter Initiative program has been moving along quite well. It has become something of excitement for both the fathers and daughters of the community. The difference it is making in the behavior of children is noteworthy and appreciable.

Details of Enrolled Students

NFE (Non-School Going Students) : 24

REC (School Going Students) : 46

Total Enrollment : 70

Average attendance : 70 %

(In the month of June average attendance was 48% as children went to their Native places during School Holidays. In the months of July, August, and September the average attendance was 80%)

• Regular Classes
Classes were taken on a syllabus developed by Deepalaya for subjects including, English, Hindi, Math, and Environmental Studies. Arts and Crafts classes were also held to further develop the children’s talents. All these subjects were taught in an interactive method through rhymes, skits, games, stories etc.

• Assessment of Students
New enrolled students of Non Formal Education were assessed for their learning level so as to prepare lesson plan accordingly. Monthly tests were conducted to assess the REC (School Going Students) and to better understand the progress each child made in each subject. An assessment sheet is made for each student and filed in their profile.

• Attendance of students
Out of the 24 NFE and 46 REC students, almost all the students attended class regularly. Attendance is low during the month of June due to the closing of schools for summer vacation. During this month, mostly migrant parents go back to their native places for harvesting. They then return in July, in time for the reopening of the school when. The children have mentioned that they prefer attending school over staying home because they find their classes interesting and the atmosphere to be very friendly.

• Home Visit
58 home visits are carried out by the teachers during this period to understand the needs of the children and to motivate the parents so that they shall not prevent their child from attending classes for any petty reason. Also parents were met to understand their vocational/ professional skills so that they may produce some product along with their child in the parents meeting.

• School Visit
16 visits were done by teachers from government schools for mainstreaming and follow up of the students. A positive response was received from all government schools.

TEACHERS
Three teachers continued to handle the classes: One for the NFE and two for the REC classes. Apart from the classes, they do the documentation, home visits, Municipal School Visits, community mobilization, awareness creation, report writing, the father meetings, etc.

FATHER MEETING
Father meetings were held on june 23rd, July 29th, August 26th and september 23rd at Deepalaya School Sanjay Colony. The topics discussed included:
* Regularity of student attendance in government schools and Deepalaya classes.
* Different Government schemes for students were presented to the fathers who were hesitant to send their children to school because of economic hardships or fear of integrating their disabled child.
* Ways to take advantage of the government schemes.
* Arrangement of the documents required in order to undertake the schemes.
